In Oceans Deep

I wrote a few weeks ago about story - how our story matters and that I was committing to share more of my own story - to write, because that's how God uses us, when we are willing to share our lives. Well, that just got real… so real and the ocean is deep.

Three weeks ago I got a phone call that rocked my world and threw us into the deep place where we are now - where all we can see is waves. My mom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Literally the worst words… especially to her daughter who is 6 months pregnant with her first daughter. My heart is shattered. I wept. For five days - the day we found out, the entire travel day to get to Texas, the day we went to church and all of us prayed over her, the day we dropped her off to get on a plane to meet with the surgeon, the day of her surgery - all I did was cry. I wept for her, for my dad, for my grandma, for my brothers and sisters-in-law, for my nieces and nephews, for my husband, for myself, for my daughter. I wept for the dreams I have of my mom being at my daughter's wedding, for how this will wreck her body and make a very strong woman weak, for the dreams she has of years of being "YaYa" and loving her grandkids. When cancer is involved, the ocean gets deep and the waves quickly rise high around you.

We sat together as a family, waiting for the surgeon. Four and a half hours later, he came out to say that the tumor was self-contained and he was able to remove all traces of cancer. If you know anything about pancreatic cancer, you know this is not normal, not even close to normal. Sweet Jesus, we can see the lifeboat. It's coming. My mom has been given the gift of life - the chance to fight, many do not and we recognize how fortunate we are. We see the hand of God in so much of this story, but we still feel a bit like we're drowning.

This road is long - my mom had a major surgery where half of her stomach, two-thirds of her pancreas and her bile duct were removed. She was in the hospital for two weeks. Her recovery just from this surgery is no joke let alone the daunting road through chemo and radiation. When I think about the next 8 months of my mom's life, I weep. She knows she's not alone, but in the same breath, none of us can take this away from her or physically go through it for her. Just 3 weeks ago we were making plans for her to come the end of this month and help with our baby girl's room - and then plans two months later for her to come and stay for a bit when she's born. There's no one else I would rather have here when my daughter comes than my incredible mom. And now, we're deep in the waves not knowing much about two weeks from now, let alone two months from now. For now, she's home, she's recovering, she is handling this with so much grace and determination and she's loving being with family. But the journey is long.

There's a song called "Oceans" by Hillsong. This has been our anthem. My mom has been living in these truths for the last year as she's undergone numerous surgeries to prevent other types of cancer (ironically enough). I printed this and framed it for her - it's next to her bed. On the rough nights, the early mornings, during the times where sleep isn't coming, she can look at it and remember…

It's the wallpaper on my computer because I need the reminder multiple times a day that my faith will stand. God is for us, He is with us and this road is not being walked alone and everyday we choose to believe that He is Healer, He is Sustainer, He is Able, He is. And that He is all we need.

.taste every ounce of life.

i have these brave friends who live in sacramento... he is a lawyer, she is a writer (seriously LOVE her stuff), they have a darling little anna. this family has just walked a hard, hard road with chemo therapy and tomorrow is their victory lap. we are all posting awesomeness on jonathan's facebook wall, but i wanted to post the complete version of the awesomeness i chose to take from.
this is the last sermon written by a 33 year old pastor whose life was taken during a baptism at church. he was electrocuted. these were his final words, written but never spoken - undeniably words of life. "live and live well. BREATHE. breathe in and breathe deeply. be present. do not be past. do not be future. be now - on a crystal clear breezy 70 degree day, roll down the windows and FEEL the wind against your skin. feel the warmth of the sun. if you run, then allow those first few breaths on a cool autumn day to freeze you lungs and do not just be alarmed. BE ALIVE. get knee-deep in a novel and lost track of time. if you bike, pedal harder and if you crash then crash well. feel the satisfaction of a job well done, a paper well-written, a project throughly completed, a play well-performed. if you must wipe the snot from your 3-year-old's nose, don't be disgusted if the kleenex didn't catch it all because soon he'll be wiping his own. if you've recently experienced loss, then GRIEVE. and grieve well. at the table with friends and family, LAUGH. if you're eating, laugh at the same time, then you might as well laugh until you puke. and if you eat... then SMELL. the aromas are not impediments to your day. steak on the grill, coffee beans freshly ground, cookies in the oven. and TASTE. taste every ounce of flavor. taste every ounce of friendship. TASTE EVERY OUNCE OF LIFE...BECAUSE IT IS MOST DEFINITELY A GIFT" - kyle lake - jonathan, you are a rockstar. i so admire your faith in Jesus and the integrity and class with which you've fought and won this battle. keep fighting miller's, keep fighting...

.i love this.

my quasi-friend, Kristen posted this today. i've always known we had alot in common, but this is probably the post she's written that i resonate with the most. it's a tough subject, something i've struggled with for years, i'd even venture to say almost decades and i know i will probably never get to an "ok" place with it. i pray that i will (in fact i prayed that last night) and i hope that i do, but it's a struggle. my own journey has been long and frustrating - it ebbs and flows, succeeds and fails but never to the point where i'm satisfied.

half marathon - trained & ran 13 miles - CHECK
mudrun - 10k with muddy hills, through a lake, over walls - CHECK

P90X - for the whole 90 days without skipping - CHECK
Cleanses, fad diets, limited caloric intake - CHECK

just read her post & know that i could have written the exact same words with the same emotion behind them... i'll let you know when i figure it out. right. about that...

.turning a corner.

this last month has been hard. really hard. maybe all in all the toughest month of my life. satan has literally attacked every area of my being - my friendships, my love life, my family, my finances, my work and my body. the month of february has been exhausting, frustrating, unnerving, anger-provoking, devastating and empty. and i've been pushing back against God. i've been in the struggle with him, feeling like he's not fighting for me. i've been in a gnarly season of questions and stubbornness.

this last week there has been a little lull in the chaos and i've felt like i'm starting to turn a corner for the better.

me and God? we're talking again. me and my friends? we're starting to mend some of the brokenness. my family? we're starting to deal with the reality of living life without a man we loved so much. my finances? there's enough there to cover the deficit. my work? God is beginning to open doors we didn't think were open for this summer. i feel like God is beginning to move and i am am finally throwing in the white flag - surrendering my desire to control, giving up the struggle and letting Him fight for me.

today was the first day i've ever heard this song by brandon heath and it's helping me to cease struggling and trust:

I can’t walk without watching where I’m going
I can’t speak without knowing what to say
I can’t love without any hesitation, ‘cause I know that you don’t work that way
I can’t reach without something to offer
I can’t come now, I am so ashamed
I can’t hold out for you any longer, ‘cause I know that you don’t work that way

I’m not gonna fight you anymore
I’m not gonna try to lock the door
You took your life and gave me yours
There’s no reason why, I shouldn’t trust you with mine

It’s never easy changing direction
It’s so unnatural to loosen up my grip
Are you growing weary, of all my good intentions, ‘cause I know that you don’t work that way

I’m not gonna fight you anymore
I’m not gonna try to lock the door
You took your life and gave me yours
There’s no reason why, I shouldn’t trust you with mine

Some days this weight upon my shoulders is my shame I know I should know better
‘Cause you say that I must now surrender, there’s no other way

I’m not gonna fight you anymore
I’m not gonna try to lock the door
I needed life, you gave me yours
You took your life and gave me yours
There’s no reason why, I shouldn’t trust you with mine
